چکیده

The two or three posterior ciliary arteries (medial and lateral posterior ciliary arteries), which are the source of blood supply to the posterior choroid, are also the major souice of blood supply to the optic nerve head (Hayreh, i969, I970) and have a segmental distribution (Hayreh, I970, I97ib). The ciliary circulation is the only source of blood supply to the lamina cribrosa and prelaminar regions, and it is an important if not the only source of supply to the retrolaminar part of the optic nerve. Hayreh (i 969, I 97 I a) put forward the view based on these studies that ischaemic optic neuropathy is produced by acute occlusion of the posterior ciliary arteries (PCAs). The effects ofacute occlusion of the PCAs on the optic nerve head have been investigated experimentally in rhesus monkeys. These produced a clinical and histopathological picture of ischaemic optic neuropathy. Intravenous fluorescence fundus angiography (IVFA) studies of patients with ischaemic optic neuropathy have further confirmed the presence of occlusion of the PCAs.

Occlusion of posterior ciliary artery. IV. Electroretinographic studies.

The effects of posterior ciliary artery (PCA) occlusion have been studied in rhesus monkeys by Hayreh and Baines (I972 a, b, c), who reported the effects of occlusion of the medial PCA, lateral PCA, and all the PCAs on the choroidal circulation (Hayreh and Baines, I972a) and optic nerve head (Hayreh and Baines, I972C), and the productionof chorioretinal lesions (Hayreh and Baines, 1972b). Their...

Electroretinal responses in ocular vascular occlusions due to temporal arteritis.

Temporal arteritis is a potentially blinding disease of the elderly; its effects are principally due to inflammatory obliteration of the arterial supply to the retina and the optic nerve head. The ophthalmic artery and the extraocular course of the central retinal and posterior ciliary arteries may be involved singly or in combination. The usual presenting feature in these cases is acute ischae...

Correlation Between Ischemic Retinal Accidents and Radial Peripapillary Capillaries in the Optic Nerve Using Optical Coherence Tomographic Angiography: Observations in 6 Patients

BACKGROUND Perfusion of the optic nerve has been widely studied using fluorescein angiography (FAG), which is currently regarded as the criterion standard. However, FAG has adverse effects associated with intravenous contrast administration and is limited in its capacity to characterize and stratify the different vascular layers of the optic nerve and retina. The use of new imaging techniques, ...

Morning glory disc anomaly in association with ipsilateral optic nerve glioma.

Comment. Improvement in vision rarely occurs in patients with AION due to GCA, presumably because there has been complete occlusion of the posterior ciliary arteries causing optic nerve head infarction. Although some series have reported improvement in up to one-third of patients, there has often not been an improvement in the visual field, suggesting that the apparent recovery could be an arti...

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in an Isolated Cilioretinal Artery Occlusion: A Case Report

The arterial blood supply to the eye is provided by the ophthalmic artery, one of the branches of the internal carotid artery. The branches of the ophthalmic artery which meet the metabolic needs of the globe are central retinal artery, short and long posterior ciliaries, anterior ciliaries. The central retinal artery enters the globe through the optic nerve and supplies blood to the inner laye...
